Free WordPress Theme – Reference

With visitor conversion in mind, this theme features additional widget areas in all the important locations, including a top banner, a menu widget area (perfect for text links ads), three top boxes (perfect for latest news or lead generation forms), as well as 4 bottom area widget boxes (perfect for blogrolls or an “About” paragraph).

    hello dear,
i just intalled your theme on my new wordpressblog. pls could you help with tutoria on how to do the rest of the work after installation. ie..customizinng the header, setting the publishin, categories, acctivating the webform etc..

    • Greg says:

Thanks for installing the theme, I will write a tutorial here once I get the time to do so, but it is actually quite easy to set up the widgets: just go to the widget page, and drag text widgets to the theme widget areas on the right, and enter whatever code you might want to add to the text widgets. For the webform I show on the theme thumbnail, it is actually a email opt in form from Aweber. You can install javascript code into the text widget areas and drag them to the widget area you want.

  2. Jai says:

Maybe I’m wrong, but alot of this themes files look exactly like Twenty Tens, wouldn’t this be considered a child theme, cept more of a copy? I see the header options removed, and added widgets, but everything else looks the same. In fact I took a few of the themes files from Twenty Ten and rename “twenty ten” within the files and they would work with this. Never the less, it’s a nice theme.

    • Greg says:

Hi Jai, you are right, this theme “references” the TwentyTen, that’s why I called it Reference. The differences between this theme and the TwentyTen are the new widget areas that I placed into the theme, which you will see in the Widget setup page. I also removed the header which to me is unnecessarily space consuming. Other than that, yes everything else should be the same.

  3. Is there a way to include a header image in this theme?

    • Greg says:

Hi Maria, I deliberately remove the header image because it was not necessary for my purpose. But if you want you can always add it back just by simply adding it back to the theme file, probably header.php. You can compare the header.php of this theme to the one in the default TwentyTen theme and see where the header image was placed.

  4. Bob says:

Hi. The theme is great. It’s clean. I’ve mucked around with the fonts a bit but I love the flexibility of the widgets.

One problem: on IE the background is disappearing as soon as it meets the title or header widget (I have an image in the header widget). Can you fix?

  5. Octo says:

How can I change the default font size or even family? I have tried to edit all these style sheets with this theme, yet nothing I do makes any difference. I like the theme, but the font size is too big and if I cannot make it smaller by default, then I must pass.

    Thanks.

    • Greg says:

Hi Octo you should be able to easily change the font size by modifying the stylesheets. What I would suggest then is you should use Firefox browser and install Firebug, then right click on the fonts you want the size to change, and find out on which stylesheet that particular font size is set, and change that stylesheet.

  6. Flek says:

Very simple theme. Thanks a lot.

  7. Toni says:

I really like this theme and use it on my webside.
Simple, clear and stylish. Easy to use.

    Thanks for your work!

P.S: If there is a further version a header with a picture to upload would be nice ;-)

    • Greg says:

thank you Toni! I removed the header deliberately for this theme because it was too space consuming and has no function other than eye candy, so it was not suitable for my purpose.

  8. Ben says:

    Hi Greg,
Thanks so much for the clean theme.
    Three questions:
1st – How do you display videos in category pages?
Currently, when posting to a category page only Title & text excerpt are displayed in category page.
2nd – How do you display full text of posts in category pages?
3rd – How do you upload a custom image to replace the default one placed in the upper left hand corner?

Thanks in advance and again, appreciate the theme!

    Regards,
    Ben

    • Greg says:

Hi Ben, your category page is only displaying the excerpt. You could modify your loop.php, find the line < ?php if ( is_archive() || is_search() ) : // Only display excerpts for archives and search. ?>, and remove the whole “If” section and only leave the “Else” section. Hope this helps.

By default the upper left does not have an image. It is actually plain text. If you want to have an image there, you will have to modify the header.php, but you will need some html skills to do so.

  9. Sebastian says:

in the screenshot above, could you add arrows to mark the widget areas?

How do I create a two-column area as in the screenshot above (the reason I picked this theme)?

    Thanks!

    • Greg says:

Hi Sebastian, by the “two-column” area, I guess you mean the area in the screenshot where there are two pictures beside some text, and on the rightmost side there is a subscription form.

If you go into your admin panel, and click on “Widgets”, you can see on the right side a collection of widget areas. The specific areas you asked about are “First Header Widget Area” and “Second Header Widget Area”, and the email form in the screenshot is the “Third Header Widget Area”.

What I used to create what you see in the screen-shot are Text Widgets. Although they are called Text Widgets, you can actually enter anything into them, including html code and Java Script code.

  10. Ben says:

Thanks Greg, appreciate the tip, have a nice weekend!

  25. Good Afternoon

Awesome post, just want to say thanks for the share

  26. Simon Loveland says:

    Hi

Like the theme. Good idea. How do I get images into one of the multi-column widgets? Also how would I get the multi-columns just to appear on the home page?

    Thanks

    Si

    • Greg says:

Thanks Simon. These columns are widget areas. In my screen shot demo I used text areas, and the images were inserted with html tag since you can enter html code into text widgets.

      • Simon Loveland says:

OK, I’ll try some html pasted into the text widget. However, I’m still not sure how I could have say ‘tasters’ of a complete article appear on the home page(index.php) with links to the complete article at the end. How would I achieve this?

        Thanks

        Si

        • Greg says:

Hi Simon, the best way to do this is to make use of WordPress’s tag when you edit a post. Otherwise you will need to modify the theme’s loop.php, find the place where it says

          < ?php the_content( __( 'Continue reading →', 'reference' ) ); ?>

          Next, change it to

          the_excerpt();

this is amazing men, and its clean wordpress theme. thanks

  28. LQ says:

This theme shows up when I search for “custom header”-enabled themes, which it shouldn’t if it has the header image disabled. Just a note that something somewhere in its info is wrong. :)

    • Greg says:

Thanks for the note. You may be right… but in a different perspective maybe the customizable top right banner image and the 3 top widgets under the menu can be considered part of the customizable header =)

  29. ops says:

Hi, I have two questions for Twenty Ten theme:

First: I’d like to remove underline from meta in the content (author, time, tags ecc.) and the blacks square on the sidebar as shown in this pictures:

    http://i56.tinypic.com/29yfi80.jpg

Second: How can I add a simple code, for example RSS
    , in header.php?

    Thanks for your help!

    • Greg says:

to remove underline and the black square, you will need to modify style.css and you need to know some basic CSS to do so. If you are doing this kind of work you should use Firefox and install Firebug so you can quickly find where in the CSS file you should modify. For the underline you will apply “text-decoration: underline;” to these anchor links. For the dot you will need to apply something like “list-style-type: none;” to the ul element. You can google more about it.

For the feedburner link, you should search for a WordPress Feedburner plugin and that will take care of the feed for you. If you want to modify the header file, use the “Editor” under Appearance in the WordPress admin area.

  30. Melissa Odom says:

Thanks for the theme. I am using for my website.
I am trying to figure out how to delete “Bookmark the Permalink” at the bottom or single post listing – http://www.dealsforequality.com/what-is-deals-for-equality/

I looked in the single.php file, but still could not figure out what to change.

Could you tell me what file to look in and the specific code I am looking for to make that change?

Thanks so much for your help!

    • Greg says:

Hi Melissa, you can look for that inside functions.php, search for “_posted_in()” and you will find the code that outputs the link you want to remove.
